The Horseback Safaris project has it all – excitement, adventure, wildlife, fun and of course – horses! This is a fabulous hands on project based on a private wildlife reserve in the South African bush. Fun is the name of the game, along with horseback safaris, horse care, riding, jumping, and taking part in gymkhanas and fun shows.

You will learn a lot during your time on this project - you will be taught all there is to know about horse care and management in the bush as well as conservation, ecology, wildlife management and animal behaviour. Being surrounded by South Africa's biggest game reserves and the world famous Kruger National Park you will also be involved in wildlife conservation projects in and around the reserve.

         

 

Activities you will be involved in include:

  • Grooming
  • Lungeing
  • Training and schooling horses
  • Riding out on horseback safaris
  • Gymkhanas and fun shows
  • Improving your riding skills
  • Learning about horse management in the bush
  • Identification of animals, birds, insects and plants
  • Sleep outs - building shelters, food preparation, navigation by stars and bush aids
  • Game drives and walks around the nature reserve

Project Location: Limpopo Provice, South Africa. The Horseback Safaris project is located at the foot of the Drakensburg Mountains in a private nature reserve close to the world famous Kruger National Park

Start Dates: First and third Monday of each month

Duration: Any length from two weeks to six months
